Reading Comprehension
What
Reading Comprehension is an understanding of the written text.
Why
Student comprehension is essential to academic and lifelong learning. It often involves:
- intentional, problem solving thought
- relating text to life experiences and
- constructing mental images in memory.
(National Reading Panel, 2006)
How
As students read and listen to passages, they create images in their minds. They pause frequently to discuss meaning. To reinforce meaning, students retell the story in their own words. Heidi Hildebrandt, Owner and Tutor at Steps 2 Reading, LLC, assists the students in defining new words, making associations, drawing pictures, and playacting to facilitate comprehension.
