Phonics
What
Phonics instruction teaches students to associate letter symbols with their names and sounds.
Why
When students know letters and sounds, they can manipulate them for reading and spelling – a skill called phonemic awareness.
Systematic, synthetic phonics instruction has a positive and significant effect on reading skills, making it a valuable and essential part in reading programs. (National Reading Panel, 2006)
How
Steps 2 Reading, LLC students learn and practice phonics in an organized, logical sequence. Then, they use multi-sensory techniques to apply their knowledge to reading and spelling.
As students progress, they study the English language, learning syllable patterns and word parts to become more skilled in reading and spelling.
In addition, using kinesthetic-tactile memory techniques, students learn to automatically read and spell frequently used words that do not follow normal English patterns.
